This is true. However, if you don't have insurance then you can screw over the system as they cut the bill in half for those without insurance and then they send it to a collection agency. The collection agency will only charge you for what they paid for the debt, which is less than a quarter of what the hospital charged you (which you can pay in monthly amounts).

Though they drop the debt if you don't pay it for 6 years. I have had so much medical debt and I now owe nothing due to this trick.
