I've come across quite a few amazing stories on this site. But sure enough there are a couple of 0.5 and 1 star rating here and there. It doesn't put me off even a bit. Heck, I would rather read a story with a 3-star average than one 5-star rating. Infact I am generally more inclined to read a story with more ratings, even if it is poorly rated, than one that has no ratings at all.
I get it that criticism is hard to take, I tried writing a story some time back as well. It became evident by the feedback really quick that I am better at writing reports than fictions. But I did not think they are haters or that they are trolls.
But I see a lot of authors complain about the rating system, and sure there are trolls that needs to be handled. As far as I know the site moderator is quite responsive to any reports. My problem is with authors that cannot seem to fathom the possibility that their work was somehow, somewhere lacking. That there could be something that needs to be fixed.
I am really glad for the amazing content that the internet has made so readily available. I have probably read more webfics than traditional novels in the last two-years. But the difference in quality is undeniable. Even between two new webfic authors. There is a definite observable difference between someone who has edited their works and revised before publishing and someone who has not. You can even make out whether the author's proficient and knowledge in the language as well.
The point is this: Authors put a lot of time and effort into their work. But that does not mean it is perfect. As such not every 1-star rating might be from a hater or a troll.
