Writing How often do you re-describe a character appearance?

As a reader, especially in longer novels, I tend to forget what characters look like, especially if i stop reading the novel for a bit to stack chapters. Little reminders of hair and eye color, even build, help to refresh my memory and refine my mental image for specific scenes. I think there's a lot of scenes where these little details can be included without disrupting the narration, even in fights, the trick is just not having too much. But waiting for every change seems like too much when in most stories, character appearances stay fairly static except for maybe a couple major changes and perhaps in fights. Depends on the length of story imo.
