Just take the thing you were planning to have kill them, and then weaken it so it only breaks their legs.

Isekai off the OP plot hole characters to their own world. :-)

Remove them from the main storyplot within reason.
Maybe some die, maybe some go off to do different paths than the mc characters, etc.
