I'm wondering...

I've been writing quite a few short stories and submitting them to magazines in hope they get accepted so I can buy a better laptop cause my current one is practically busted beyond repair. Of course, my first few attempts got rejected, but I didn't get into this profession cause I had false dreams of getting it right the first time. However, that does lead my stories unused, and since their word count is decently high(around 15,000 words average) that means most other magazines won't accept them.

I've been thinking of uploading them here for a few reasons:
  • They'll actually be read instead of gathering dust
  • Although they're short stories, all of them take place within the same world and build off of each other to create a narrative. For instance, one short story might set something up, and then another story will explore it more in depth
  • Building a narrative among an anthology series is something I've always wanted to do, but I know it won't be the most popular thing around
Would posting my stories as an anthology work on here. If not, I'll probably do it anyway, but I at least want to know if it'll be worth it since if I post them here and it turns out there was a whole other magazine I could've submitted to, then I wouldn't be able to submit to them since I brought it here first.

Anthologies aren't very popular here, but there'll definitely be people who read them. I've no idea if it would be worth it instead of submitting it to a magazine later, mostly because I don't know what prizes we're talking about here, so that's entirely your call. Personally I probably wouldn't publish them here, but that's a lot of personally.

Is- is this something you can do????
Nz yeah

I was a librarian for a bit a few years ago.

Don't know about other countries.

In nz, an author can go in to the local library and say I wrote a book I want to add it to the library. They would leave us a copy we would assess it and if it can be accepted we add the donated copy to the library.

Since it's a library we like to have a collection of local authors regardless how awful it is.

Some times and author go, we are not donating it, I only have one and I am selling it to the library. We assess and 9/10 we add it to the collection, and we pay the author for that book.

If it something we think will get borrowed a lot we keep one reference copy and buy around 20 to 30 lending copies across the network of libraries in the city.

Author usually takes some time to get more copies if they are self published, but we also recommend, the local books publisher/ library supplier to them, to making things easier to get the bulk order.

The supplier/publisher would also distribute to local books stores as well, so authors tend to go for it. But they would eventually get an agent to sort it out for them and find a publisher to be associatd with, if they wanna go big name international instead of just nz/aus.

If the lib decide not to add the book to the collection we just give the book back to the author.

Libraries also host book signing and book launches for authors, writers doo readings talking bout their books and sell the books on the night/day.

That’s actually really cool! Thanks for the info :)

Alas, it is no longer the 90's. The age of AI has changed the landscape for the struggling writer.

I recommend going on fiverr. Anything you publish here cannot be sold as is, because someone will Google what you sell, if they find it on the internet, even if you wrote it, they can't use.

When you ghost write, you do not exist.

My recommendation is, delete what ever you sell.

NEVER SELL YOUR NAME.

If you cannot control the final product, they can't have your name. Trust me. Sold my name once without controI. I still regret it.

Once you get a job, ask for qualifiers. Most people requesting ghost writers have a certain style they want. Fluff is the enemy, because your work will be rewritten.

Then never admit to it. Ever. Yes, I ghost write, but you will never know for who or what stories. Ever. The moment someone thinks you are a bragger, your rep is shot.

What's the pay of getting into a magazine
There've been 2 magazine's I've been submitting to.

Clarkesworld pays $0.12 per word and has a max word count of 21,000 for submissions. Meaning a full length novelette would pay around $2,500
Beneath Ceaseless Skies pays $0.08 per word and has a max word count of 15,000 for submissions with a max payout of $1,200

The reason why I've been submitting to these sites is because they have a much larger wordcount which I use in order to explore my stories a bit more in depth and they both have fantasy themes to their stories. Every other fantasy mag I found usually barely went above 7,000 words, if that. Really, the main reason I'm hoping to get a story into a magazine is to get that better laptop and so I can show potential publishers that I've submitted something when I eventually try to get a longer book published.

Don't really have a specific one in mind, but looking on Amazon, unless if you want something pretty new using top of the line components, none really go above $400. And even the top of the line laptops barely go above $500. A single paycheck will get me a good laptop that's a million times better than the crappy chromebook that pretty much tanked after I graduated school.

Huh. What country do you live in? I have an old laptop I'm not using. It works. It plugs in. It's got about 40 gigs and runs windows XP, I think. Bet you could write on it just fine. If you pay the shipping, I suppose I could mail it out to ya. Kinda heavy. This a laptop from back when laptops were chunky. I don't think it could run Windows 10, but don't ask me. My wife runs my Tech Support. I'm only promising I'll check to see if it still boots up after being plugged in before I ship it out to you. Everything after that is on you.

I'll be shipping from Central New York in America to wherever you are. Figure 20 pounds. So I leave calculating the cost of shipping up to you and if it is worth it. I got a metric ton of packing material, so it'll get there in one piece... most likely.

I'l giving it away for free, so that should tell you how old it is. Note, I'm at work, so I'll have to dig it up to make sure it's still working, but I think it was working as of... September? I had to get something off it. BTW, I expect you to delete anything you find on it, if I happen to miss anything. I lent it to a client for a few months. No idea how badly he might have screwed it up the hard drive or what might be on it. I doubt there's any porn. I think I wiped whatever he used it for, but I don't care enough to spend much time actually cleaning the hard drive.

STRICTLY AS IS.

Ah... Back in the day, I remember when making .03 cents a word meant you were hot stuff. Used to do shit for Bardic Press selling d20 OGL material. made the mistake of selling them the right to put my name on the product. Big f'in mistake. Lord did they butcher my work. Eventually started working for a... well... let's just say all those harlequin romances look-a-likes you find at a duty-free/rest stop/ minimart basically all get printed at the same place under a hundred different labels.

The editor would hire 3 to 6 people to write the same story for a nickel a word by a deadline. Take everyone that finished on time, pay us, then give all of them to the "Author" who would cherry-pick the best plotlines and stitch it together then publish under a standardized pseudonym. It was the equivalent of an assembly line making automobiles. They'd pump out a bodice ripper every week like clockwork.

I know what Fiverr is. It's just I'm kind of confused at what you're were talking about.

I'm broke right now which is why I'm trying to sell my work. I appreciate the offer though.

I don't understand any of what you're talking about, but then again this is my first time trying to get into the writing industry. I'm guessing whatever happened was bad though. Sorry for not being able to understand.

If they're already complete and you won't be submitting them anywhere else, then posting them isn't a bad idea. That, or you can polish them up and self-publish to Amazon. Alternatively, make a Ko-Fi for tips. There are other options available than the magazines to make money off your writing. Fiverr is there but eh.

If Money is a goal, then explore what's open to you. But, if money isn't gonna happen, putting them up for free means people get to read it anyways.
