Iirc some works place their heroes in a post apocalyptic Earth with an asteroid ring like Saturn surrounding it. Or a complete lack of everything is also possible, after all, what you want is A LACK OF CELESTIAL BODY by MC's time as you pen them down. Meaning the moon can exist until a doonkaberry or two decided to Ultra Mega Hyper Extreme nuke moon. That way the moon served its purpose to help make life and get dragged to back of the shed for its trouble.
