My novel has a guy and isn't explicit at first, but he's definitely self loathing. If you're okay with a slow burn on that character trait, it could work to you. Although I do have to give a disclaimer in that he seems to be the complete opposite in personality a lot of times. It felt realistic to have someone who was self-loathing to be completely overcompensating for their self perception.
