So @greyblob 's thread inspired me to do some data collection,

The collection consists of 170 novels which were in trending on 23-09-2021

Title Length
1632416260350.png

Avg = 30.45 chars
Std = 20 chars
Min = 4 chars (REND)
Max = 141 chars (That Time I got reincarnated as… The Demon Lord’s butler?! Now I should help her annihilate all Humans while hiding the fact I’m helping them)
25 / 50 / 75 % = 17 / 27 / 38

The titles for the most part are pretty reasonable on nuf but you do get the occasional jp inspired titles.

Synopsis Length
Avg = 967 chars
Std = 627 chars
25/50/75 = 507/808/1339
Min = 64 chars (Brightest Doom)
Max = 3562 chars (Days of a Wrathful Demoness)

Around 800~1000 words seems to be the sweet spot I guess.

People really love weak-to-strong stuff huh? R-18 is also pretty fucking high. Interestingly, the mid tier stuff is all the fetishes ranging from demon girls, incest to futa.

Not listing all ~550-ish of them but yeah. Btw Cryostasis was used once and that really makes me happy :)

I did another association mining even if it wasnt really gonna work due to have 550 tags in 170 series... dont take this ones seriously at all.
Still these all do seem to make sense to me.

Most common sense stuff proves to be true. There are some interesting strong implications too, so you might wanna join the crowd or alternatively try to stand out?

Genre distribution:
genre.png

Remember that this is from a set of size 170. Total number of genres tagged were 1249. So ideally if every tag were to be given equal importance, the average count of tag should be ~40.3 times. Aka at sol and smut-tier.

Removing the inflated, useless genres like fantasy, action and adventure, we get an average of 32 times. So I guess the gender bender to school life part of the chart is what should ideally the case be.

As such I would suggest to slap the 2~3 useless genres + 1~2 from isekai to mature + your actual genre from gb to school life + ~1 from bottom to spice up your story. The limit is 9 genres, this comes out at 5 to 7 genres. Perfect.

@Agentt asked for some more stats on my profile,
"Number of shoujo written by men/number of shounen written by girls?"

Unfortunately it turns out that Shonen and Shoujo do not exist as a genre or tag on sh. I thus went with Seinen and Josei.
For seinen, there were 12 series in trending out of which,
  • 3 didnt list their gender
  • 1 was female
  • 8 were male
For josei there were 2 series in trending,
  • 1 was female
  • 1 was male

I feel like keeping track of which novels get into the top 9 in trending (since they show up on the front page and is what people care about), and then keeping stats over a period of time (like a month) would yield a lot more useful information.

It looks like you just took all novels that existed on rising and did your analysis there? By the time you get to 170th place on rising, it feels like that just means you did stats on relatively active novels as of 23-09-2021, which also means the analysis just feels like what people are writing now, rather than what would make a novel trending.

Still, great job.

This is fascinating. Unfortunately it's meaningless with such a small sample size. Another idea would be the average views of a series gained the day before trending, but that would require a bit too much work.
Also why is your data different than mine?

I didn't scrape any numbers so I can't compare those. But here's the reoccurrence of certain serieses and their rankings:

A Lewd Story
#32 #28

Omnicrafter (A Crafting Adventure LitRPG)
#19 #38

Don’t disturb Nasari
#54 #41

World Dungeon Craft [A Low-Stakes, Smile Inducing LitRPG Adventure]
#16 #67

He Who Fights With Monsters
#24 #82

DB: ボールに願い Taming the Tsundere Shortie
#66 #87

What Do You Mean All Dungeons Are Girls!!!?
#51 #92

Edit: I just realized this is from 23 only.

I do agree that the top nine would be better as well. I’d rather see its progress over the course of a year though personally. You could track how trends are changing from one year to a next. There is one benefit to what they did though, the tag frequencies. Since most new readers when not on top nine on trending find stuff through searching by popular tags after popular genres. I’ve actually wanted to see the popular tag stats for a while to determine what readers are most likely searching for and this actually works. Just been too lazy to go and collect all the data.

I was going to do top 9 first, but it was kinda pointless to do that for just a single day...
I sort of think the first page of trending in the series-ranking page (around ~25 novels) makess the most sense over long periods of time.

I am thinking tracking it for a month and than just slicing for top 9/25/50 for stats

The stuff pickles to ~450 kb per day so no reason to not store everything

In all honesty, anything below the top nine doesn’t really do much for authors, it’s more like noise in the data collection process. Not many people check it. And just about any random story can get to spots ten through twenty five just by releasing enough moderately competent chapters spaced out a bit within two days.

At that point it just becomes a matter of quantity of releases verses what’s actually popular.

There is no weight counted for being successful. You are assuming the #170 has the same weight as #1.

I would say this is less about what stories succeed but more about what an average SH author writes.

So @greyblob 's thread inspired me to do some data collection,

The collection consists of 170 novels which were in trending on 23-09-2021

The titles for the most part are pretty reasonable on nuf but you do get the occasional jp inspired titles.

I honestly probably will check out the longer ones just for the sheer fact that they are willing to write those in the presence of a main page that promotes daily uploads. But as expected, the average is at ~2.3k

Most common sense stuff proves to be true. There are some interesting strong implications too, so you might wanna join the crowd or alternatively try to stand out?

Pfft. Yea good efforts my man. Personally tho i stopped giving a single fuck about the trending page. I ain't motivated enough to consistently churn out chapters every day. I was for a while, then got lazy again.

Anyway, yeah. Admire your passion, at least

I am thinking tracking it for a month and than just slicing for top 9/25/50 for stats

The stuff pickles to ~450 kb per day so no reason to not store everything
Top 25 is good enough imo. Give it a month or so and run the stats again. Maybe even add the reoccurring titles+rankings while you're at it.

There is no weight counted for being successful. You are assuming the #170 has the same weight as #1.

I would say this is less about what stories succeed but more about what an average SH author writes.

But there is. I believe Trending works by giving each story a score of how many engagements it got prior to that day. #170 is not as successful as #1 but it's more successful than #171. I agree limiting the range would give more accurate results, and I'm pretty confident once more data is gathered - a formula of not success but of what's sought after would emerge.
