Interesting little case here. I wrote an Aggretsuko fanfiction quite a while ago that went mostly unnoticed because, like everything I do, it's meant to challenge people, and it's meant to be weird. People say that they want that kind of thing, in the same way that they say they want a challenge in video games, or Lisa Simpson wanted a challenge when she went to military school. They want the ego boost that comes with overcoming a difficult challenge, but they hate the challenge itself.

(Btw, read my story if you're curious as to what I mean when I say that my writing is 'challenging' https://www.scribblehub.com/series/163014/stupid-story-about-dragons/ )

Anyways, my Aggretsuko fanfiction is probably the weirdest and most disturbing on the site. It essentially features Fenneko being 'crazy', and attaching herself to Retsuko. She gets rid of Gori for getting too close to her, then she essentially forces Retsuko to be in a relationship with her, and threatens anyone who she sees as getting too close to her girlfriend. It's also revealed that the reason she did it was because her teacher, molested her when she was a student, and she is in the same relationship with another student when Fenneko decides to visit her.

Pretty dark stuff, right? You could imagine why it wasn't very popular when I first published it. It didn't get the incredible amount of hate that Pink Turns To Blue got (seriously, you'll get a ban if you post it on the Kipo subreddit, that's how bad it is), but it certainly wasn't well-liked.

Then, season 3 was released, which I didn't watch (I tend not to watch the latest season of a show if I feel like the previous season wasn't very good. I didn't like season 2 of Aggretsuko, and I didn't like season 4 of She-Ra, so I didn't watch anything beyond them), and for some reason, my story jumped from about 19 kudos to 42.

I guess that people just weren't ready for a story quite as weird as mine until later. It's just kind of amusing watching things like this happen.

Side-note: I want to re-write this, or at least edit it better, at some point.

just to clarify, fanfiction is like making up your own story and lore for something someone else has published right? Like Samurai Champloo or something right?

If so, I've only read one fanfiction in my life, and it was a Naruto one called Joie de Vivre by a dude named Raga on royalroad. It was okay until he started introducing drones and other various modern technology to the ninja world which kinda ruined the entire Naruto vibe of the story for me. Still, it was an interesting idea the way he went about it before that.

You haven't mastered the art of reading fan fictions until you finished My Immortal.
Just read the description to My Immortal. Is it strange that I'm impressed that whoever wrote that managed to NEVER spell anyone's name the same way a second time? And "goff"? XDDDD

I don't really get the feel that it was hated, more like, people aren't interested at all.

Reddit does have some strict regulations, doesn't mean people hate it. Reddit just don't want it there.

And, people aren't a singular entity.

And the jump was of course the sudden deluge of interest from old and new fans. Would probably happen again when season four comes. Doesn't really mean that people hate it before then like it now. It just received more attention. Probably happens with other fictions too.

This isn't really a case of people hating it then liking it later, more like getting more exposure because of some external events. Not really surprising, it happens all the time.

Hmmm. . . that hits the spot.

Every subreddit is different, dude. Just like people aren't a singular entity, Reddit doesn't really have blanket moderation. If it did, there wouldn't be porn subreddits, for instance.

It really is just the one sub for that one fandom that hated my story. If you need proof of that, well, just look at the comments for that one on Wattpad, as well as AO3. I think the issue is that the people there are very aware of how a show like that could become flooded with porn and gore like the MLP community was, so they're overpolicing it, with some users designating themselves "Defenders of the fandom."

But, yeah, this story was definitely disliked at the time. I posted it during season 1, and it didn't get the same flood of users when season 2 came out, which was why I found it odd to see interest for an old story after season 3 was released. I assumed that one of the pairings within it became popular after the character's interacted in season 3 in a specific way, resulting in people searching for the pairing or remembering that it existed and being interested in it after they grew to like the pairing. Fan culture is very focused on pairings, after all, understanding that is a key part of understanding fandoms as a whole. Why some things become extremely popular, and others don't, for instance, or why some things are disliked/liked.

In my experience, the quality of a fanfic is always going to be secondary to the pairing used in the fanfic when factoring in if people will like/dislike it, or even read it at all.

My Immortal is mainly popular with normies because Youtubers love talking about it. It just irritates me now because it's so popular that people are always trying to cash in on it.

Three authors have come forward claiming to be the author of it, then saying: "Yeah, I'm the author, buy the good books I'm writing now, as well as the biography I wrote about my experience writing that story."

I think that the most popular theory of the author is that she was an Indian girl who didn't understand English too well and only barely understood emo culture. There are some references to India within the story, and it would explain why she apparently needed help writing it, yet it was still terrible.

Check out My Inner Life, if you want another notorious bad fanfiction that fewer people know about. It's pretty much My Immortal for hipsters.

That is what I meant. They have strict regulations. Well, at least that is what I heard. That is pretty much a very big complaint against Reddit. It becomes so highly regulated. I'm not a user thought so that is an outsider's perspective.

Again, just because no one come to read doesn't mean they hate it. There is just not much interest. I don't know but, it seems that the show itself isn't that popular in the first season? It is like you have a different idea what hate means. Hate doesn't mean unpopular. In fact, a lot of popular stuff amasses a lot of hate.

And things getting some or even huge interest from external factors is common. Like Corona Beer got a lot of attention because of the Corona Virus Pandemic. This is practically the idea behind product placements. It is interesting but it is not really that surprising or anything.

It is not as if there are no native English speaker who can't write English properly.

I don't think you really understand what I'm saying. Do you want to read my comment again, a little more closely?

As for the second thing. We don't think it was an Indian who wrote it just because of the poor English. It's mainly that, and the references to India sprinkled throughout.

I know what you are trying to say. It is practically in the title.

But, what you described doesn't really sound like people hating it, more like, it is just unpopular or doesn't receive much attention. That it doesn't receive a lot of kudos and stuff.

Or there is a subforum that doesn't receive your work, well, I think, mostly because the person moderating it doesn't want the kind of story you wrote. But that doesn't really mean they are hating your story but more like it is just not the kind they want in their subforum.

Sure there are isolated cases like the comment you mentioned, but, that is practically quite normal in fanfiction. Shipping wars, haters that just hate stuff and whatnot. But an isolated case, a single or couple of person is not the whole community, or "people" as you call it. Someone hating your story doesn't mean the people or even most of the people actually hated your story.

And then there is the "then liked" part. Again, easily explained by the sudden increase of attention because of the new season. Most fic would have benefited from this, not just yours.

I didn't say anything about the Indians or the references. The most I did on this thing is comment on Leti's comment.

Uhhhhhhhhh.

It seems to me that you might not be a native English speaker. There's a disconnect here.

Like, what you're doing is saying: "Well, actually," then repeating exactly what I'm saying in a way that makes sense to you.

It's like you're reading: "The car is blue," then saying: "Dude, listen, that Ford is turquoise."

Also, dude, check out the comments on the story on Wattpad, like I told you to do. THAT'S where you'll see that people really disliked it.

Oh. Wattpad. So there are people there who hated it. So?

Look, you said people hate your story but now they liked it. However, what I get here is there are people at Wattpad who hate your story but people in ArchiveOfOurOwn liked your story. That doesn't support your statement, at all. It is not like, the same people who hate your story in Wattpad liked it now or anything nor do the people in ArchiveOrOurOwn hate it before.

This is like a movie is was hated domestically but was loved in China that got you saying: people hate the movie, now they like it. Like, no. The people who hated still hated it, while you got new people who liked it (and probably new people who hated it too). A far more complex situation than what you said/think. This is also why I said that "People" is not a single entity that you could simplify like that. People in Wattpad aren't the same people as people in ArchiveOfOurOwn or people in Reddit. You can't talk about these different set of people as if they are a single entity.

What happened looks more complex than just people changing their minds.

Now this will probably sound like a dumb question, but what exactly is a hipster by your definition? Because like practically every other buzzword out there, it changes every other day and no one can agree. Not being confrontational, just wondering because I'm thinking I might be thinking of hipster in the wrong way now.

Basically, the less popular version.

I guess, in a way it's like how Pet Sounds is less popular than Sgt. Peppers, therefore it would be considered 'better' by hipsters.

Well, the thing is, on AO3, anyone can comment, and anyone can kudos, even non-members. So, what tends to happens is that when anyone don't like a story, they leave mean comments, which was what happened initially. However, at the time I was more active on that account, and I deleted those ones.

But, you can't really do that on Wattpad where no one is anonymous, and I didn't do it for the story I published on AO3, so if you wanted to see what kind of hate I got initially, those comment sections are a good indicator. I think there's more than 50 on the Wattpad version, but less than 12 on AO3.

The matter stays the same. It is not because the people like your story now when they didn't before, some external events just pushed more attention to your story. Most likely, not only did it get more likes, it probably get more "hates" too.

I do wish you could post the link to the Wattpad story.

But really, this doesn't really deserve much attention. You just got more attention from the generated interests because of a new season. It happens all the time. There is no need to read more into it.

Erm, no. Like I said, I posted this in season 1, and in season 2 it didn't get any more attention. So, season 3 coming out, and a bunch of people paying attention to a story probably buried under a hundred others is kinda noteworthy.

This is the Wattpad story. Check out the comments for yourself.
