Ever try WARNO or Wargame: Red Dragon?

Perhaps Dominions 5 would be something to look at.
AI War: Fleet Command, which also has a sequel I haven't played.

Terra Invicta I haven't played yet.

Factorio, Oxygen Not Included, Endless Space 2, Mindustry (that one's free on Itch.io, but it's no worse than all the other).

Those are 4 I personally really like and can recommend. How much of a strategy or a simulation they are may vary.

Rimworld hands down. It's a colony management game with an emphasis on storytelling and your colony's survival (or lack thereof). It's incredibly in depth to the point where I don't think there's a game out there that does what's in it, namely on the medical side of things and interactivity.

You're also given gruesome, raw descriptions of events. E.g, how they were injured, how they did X, etc.

Pros: You can do anything you want.
Cons: You can do anything you want.

Basically Dwarf Fortress as an RPG.

Pros: You can do anything you want.
Cons: Items may be cursed.

Not really indie, but Squaresoft re-released "Tactics Ogre" on Steam. It was THE rpg strategy game to get back in the PS1 era.
Though, I'd wait on it to go on sale. Square do be trying to milk their back catalogue by adding some unneeded graphical flare then charging 45 bucks for a 20 year old game.

Other than that, sim wise, I'm still a fan of Satisfactory. But that's probably my modded minecraft automate all the things habit.

Not sure if it's what you want, but some of my favorite SRPGs are Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom and Disgaea 4, so I can recommend those~

Fire Emblem Engage is also really nice, but it's only available on Switch...

Do not play factorio, OP!!! Do not subject yourself to be a slave to the machines. You have better things to do, like life and family. Be closer to your parents, as they do not have much time left with you. Just don't touch factorio. This from a former slave of the factory.

If you want to play as a commander of a troops, giving orders via military radio like in the movies, you can play Radio Commander. It simulates the experience of an army major in Vietnam War.

If you want something that is more grand-strategy, you can try Shadow Empire. The latest updates solved much of the previous issues. And you can also choose the Robinson Crusoe route where you're the only major power among numerous minor powers if you find the normal game too challenging. One thing you need to bear in mind though, is logistics. Unlike other games, this game's logistics system is very involved. You can't go too far from a road or city and if you want to do it anyway, you should build roads where you want to go. Those supplies don't teleport themselves.

For a civil war experience, you can play Grand Tactician: Civil War. Though this is probably going to be too overwhelming for most people. It's grand strategy, but there's just so many things to do. You can control everything from industry, to production, to sending pugs to their deaths. But it's just a lot of things to do. Ai-chan is still learning. The tutorial itself is half an hour long with 138 tasks!

If you want a solid city-builder, you can try Tropico 6. It's a lot of fun. Ai-chan has had thousands of hours playing it on and off.

For civilization building games, Ai-chan loves Dominions series, though Ai-chan has only played 4 and 5. If this is your first time playing, just play Dominions 5. It eliminates the learning curve of Dominions 4 and is more user friendly.

Not sure if it's your cup of tea, but Majesty 2 is a solid strategy game. In this game, you don't actually control your troops directly. You build stuff, hire people, and these people do their own thing and pay taxes. If you want something killed, you put a kill flag on that, even if it's your own people or your own building and these 'heroes' would kill it if the money is right. You might also come across situations of different heroes fighting each other to either kill/destroy something or protect it.

Halo Wars is a great game, though most PC people don't know about it because it was released on X-Box and took forever to reach PC. By the time it reached PC, most people already played it on X-Box and also the PC port for Halo Wars does not take advantage of the keyboard's usefulness.

For a village building experience similar to Banished, you might be interested in Farthest Frontier. It's basically about you and a group of people running away from your oppressive lords and making a living in the wilderness. You farm, you craft, you kill (and get killed) and basically try to make your life better. It's in early access, but what's there is already more features than many games had at launch. It is also actively being developed, so you can expect quality of life updates in the future.

Have you tried Battlestar Galactica Deadlock Resurrection? In the main game, you can play as an administrator of the 12 colonies fleets and build all kinds of ships including Battlestars. There is no exodus of the 12 colonies campaign (they said because of copyright issues), but there is a campaign call Anabasis Expedition where you do something similar. In this campaign, you can't build ships, barely have any repairs or resources and you need to bring home people while being attacked by Cylons.

If you like the idea of building an empire in space while flying around in a ship that you build yourself, you can try Starpoint Gemini: Warlords. Remember, Warlords. Other Starpoint Gemini games are flight simulations.

Feed children to the children, giving you better children to feed the next generation of children-food.
Have you tried playing Ultimate General: Civil War? How about Total War Series?

Supreme Ruler 2030 is superior to Hoi 4. And I have over 1000 hours in Hoi 4
