My thoughts exactly. I used to spend most of my time on Webnovel whenever I'm on my phone, but now, I only login when I read fanfictions in my library whenever they update. The amount of smut novels and harem novels there just instantly turn me off.

Also, I want to say that Webnovel readers' taste is really bad, most of the stories there have high ratings. I don't know if they simply like smut or harem with a simple story and typical main character or they are afraid that the bad reviews will cause the author to drop the story or the author just simply deleted the negative comments

It has always been that way. You were just too late to notice.
The FL section had always been smut dominated with CEO dramas and werewolf/vampire troupes. 'Raunchy' ones included reverse harem orgies or BL smut.
Some old ML stories 'used to' skip on lemon scenes but these novels were always harems with implied snu snu nonetheless. New stories either drew inspiration from old smut driven stories or just copied the non smut stories and added smut for the sales.

It was worse, then Tony figured out something he could do in the algorithm that seems to punish smut somewhat. I have no idea WHAT he did exactly, all I know is that now the smut stuff doesn't hit the trending charts as often as it used to. Same goes for wifu cover pages. Whatever's keeping wifu cover pages from dominating like they used to is the one that really baffles me. I can understand what it would look like if you were just suppressing a tag, but how the Sam hill would the algorythm suppress a specific subject matter in the cover art that can be presented a number of different ways and in a number of different styles?

Ever heard of deep learning image recognition or image processing in AI networks? It wouldn't be that difficult to integrate picture classification into a website. The same technology or concept is embedded into captchas to defend against bots.

Breasts, Cleavage, Flushed face, Short dress, etc. = 'X' mark, Everything else = Checkmark. Checkmarks move up the system scales, and X marks go lower but don't necessarily disappear.
