Technically, there isn't any genre smut in written novels. It is Erotica/adult/mature for novels, per se. Some sites have smut but those are the ones usually more related to anime/comics.

Smut is porn, you are correct. But I called the genre of smut soft porn. Why? Because usually, smut used as a genre is lighter than hentai. Light sabers, not crazy amounts of details, and more flowery language. Usually a plot around the soft porn too. Quick sex scenes at times too, while hentai drags it on forever. Basically, every chapter is a sex scene.

Erotica/hentai/ is the more detailed version of smut to me. Less flowery language. Calling things straight as they are and such. I find erotica way more intimidating than smut. Smut and erotica are called lemon in other places, too.

It isn't about describing the sex scene is about how much detail is in it. Everyone sees genres are different. Let's pick a different one, like a tragedy. Most people read that and say damn, an MC will die, but that isn't what tragedy is. If it only revolved around death, then the world would not be as tragic as it is.
That's interesting. smut/erotica imo is descriptive heavy, sometimes using flowery words though not always. The plot also has to in some way revolve around sex.
and yeah, I've also seen both called lemon too.

The rest (quick sex scenes/fade to black) are labelled mature/adult. I guess its a matter of which site or platform you're reading on.

I'm not sure what do you mean by hentai though? are you talking about the mangas?

Ah, a classical fight over the definition of the words(genres). :blob_popcorn:
no there will be no fights. you shall not be entertained.

Mhm, smut, and hentai genre are usually seen in Manga/comics. But this site uses all the above! Mature and adult are mostly seen as the post-climax scenes. *I read too much smut in mangas.* Hentai is in the manga, but it is the term for more explicit smut scenes.

*Smut can be a hot sensual kiss too.*

Though here on this site, there is a mix of both. As there is no erotica/hentai label. The fade to black scenes technically is smut if there is a lead to the sex, like foreplay or sensual kissing. *Anything steamy is smut.* But I wouldn't even call them adult/mature. Those usually are like teen-rated things. Heck, some shows are way more detailed and still labeled for teens. :blob_happy:

The rest is erotica/hentai. I think erotica is the one that has to have the plot revolve around sex, while smut is more romantic/ sexual scenes while the plot goes on. Well, that is my understanding of it after reading loads of them.

Though, I believe even those can have different divergent plots that don't revolve around sex. Here they also call GL with smut to have Yuri. I would just call it Yuri. Same with Yaoi. These are Japanese terms, but if they are going to have smut, they might as well add Yuri and Yaoi.

And yup it all depends on the site you use. But most people tend to mix smut with erotica. As technically smut is mature/adult content. Well, for written novels.

Oh, but I'm already entertained enough. :blob_sir:

I've never seen writing called hentai but it doesn't seem far fetched.
The thing is you're labelling everything smut which I don't think makes much sense.
imo anything less than well described sex isn't smut. I guess here smut=hentai.

Smut is steamy moments, undetailed foreplay, and sex. *Any of this is considered porn.* Yes, that includes heavy, messy kisses that lead to sex. Ecchi is another thing that comes there too. But Ecchi is more for steamy moments. But imo it is the same as porn. After all, boobs are everywhere... Isn't that pornographic?

Most genres merge but have distinctions. Like Ecchi never leads to sex while smut does. But yes here hentai is smut. The thing to keep in mind though hentai/smut is the genre of Japanese novels/comics usually. They have been adapted to English and other languages too nowadays, so the meaning gets mixed.

I use smut as soft porn as it is what I am used to. Soft porn is anything from a steamy kiss, fondling, and sex. It has to show the sex, but flowery. Erotica, which isn't a genre here, is the same as hentai. Otherwise, it would be Ecchi. If we are speaking in terms, I understand.

The main issue which is that English writing porn is erotica, not smut. Technically, nothing that is written is called smut. It is mature for sexual themes/ cussing, drugs, uh anything that has to do with the "Adult World" same or the adult genre. So Mature/Adult themes would include smut, which is porn. But it isn't as detailed as Erotica.

This site though uses smut for erotica. In reality, smut isn't that detailed. There isn't a label for either though, just smut. c: But when I speak about it, I mean from my own experiences with the genre. I never had a written work called smut until I came to this site. It was mature, adult or erotica. Along with the warnings given as sexual content.

It can be different for other people though as the site here uses smut for hentai. For you, smut is detailed sex, but to me, it isn't. To me, that is erotica. But like I said earlier, tragedy can be seen as many things too. Action for someone has to be blood in every chapter, while for others, it can be in every other chapter.

Genres are subjective in a way, I guess. :blob_happy:

Jesus f*cking Borne, what you all are doing in the comments?! He asked a simple question about writing an single chapter with sex, and instead people gave him shit show of jokes and arguing about genres. So far only one guide linked a yuri guide -.-

Your fanservice smut chapter should focus on arousing the readers. You can go for standard foreplay and sex if you want to give a quick fap, or go one step further. Building sexual tension is one hell of a way to arouse the reader which is achieved by build up.

For example author Project Socialize usually takes his time to build up sexual tensions through situations, flirting, and descriptions. Sexual tension build up signals the smut, foreplay gets your hands in the pants, and the sex is there to finish the nut. If I remember correctly, the smuts take two to three chapters there.

To be honest it's hard to tell how to write a smut, even after reading and writing a crap ton of it. Use of spices depends on the story and characters, and writers need to figure it out themselves to make it work
