Smut = sex/hot themes... You said your characters were having sex. Thus, it is smut or erotic content. Smut is less detailed than erotica.

Fan service or not, smut is smut and erotica is erotica. Pick one of whichever you will use for describing your sex scenes.

do you want to write a r-18 story or a r-18 chapter? if it's the latter, you don't really have to be too specific because it's not your main focus anyway. And research (first hand or iykyk) is always recommended when writing unfamiliar scenes

I did read it but I was immediately scolded saying don't add smut to an already existing story
r-18 is basically less descriptive, less frequent smut.
look for a GL novel, check the table of contents for a chapter with a +18 in it and see what its like. repeat for a couple of novels and apply what you read to your own.

Then you should not add smut. You asked for advice, I gave you a whole guide. There is advice in that guide on how to write smut. You can skip 'rule one' yet use 'rule two'. It's that simple.

I'm going to go ahead and give you really easy advice here.

You write your sexy scene just like you would write any other scene. Structure it in three acts. You have set up. You have payoff. It's a story in and of itself.

This post helped a lot with the type of smut I write except for the type of Smit was for a specific gender as a nonbinary person I found that that didn't make sense but everything sense to me as a smut enjoyer so give it a read it'll really help you.

Really that's the difference I just thought that erotica was a Smit story but smut was the plot and nothing else, I always wanted a vivid description of my sec scenes but still want a good plot and character development

That's the thing if it makes sense to put it there and you want it there then do it, but if it can be replaced with a make out scene cause you'll mess up the flow of the story. Imagine if you will if in the middle a thriller series it suddenly changed to horror cause they know people liked that kinda stuff and went back to thriller it'll feel outta place and weird and make the audience question why you did it when something else could've replaced it and have the exact same impact so think on how you want the sex scene to be done before doing it and word of advice sex scene for fap service reasons is not a good look for any creator to do it comes off not being too proud of your story so instead of using nudes or innuendos you resort to sex for fap service sake and not cause it makes sense story wise or character wise.

Is like smut and hentai. Smut is lighter, while hentai is detailed to 100%. Erotica and smut can both have good plots. It is just how one describes the other. I guess we can call smut soft porn, while erotica is the full-blown part of it. Even Hentai/erotica can have good plots. It all depends on how you can incorporate all that sex into the plot.

Like my stories are plot first then smut. But just make sure to label your story properly and there shouldn't be any issues.

If you never labeled your story as mature/sexual content, then you should not add any. All your readers will not be expecting it. If what you had was a slow-burn romance, and you knew it would lead to sex, always label your stories correctly. That is the only way to avoid misunderstandings.

Otherwise, a story can have anything, just don't incorporate it just because of fan service. Your original story will suffer for it. I thought you were doing a separate spin-off or something like that. To be honest, fan service rarely comes out well-executed.

Orz, so,

I assume that you will post one chapter, named
Warning, 18+

Well, firstly
If this is for fan service, it shouldn't have any affect on story.
Now, this can only be done if the characters are already in a relationship, like they are marired.

Now, you can continue like any other smut.
I see that you are reluctant to do so, and yes, there is a big difference between normal smut and what you want to write,

Mainly,
Consideration.

Smut is like
Remove clothes
Write some metaphors about kiss is choco
Sleep.

But if you want to show love in your chapter, you need to show consideration.
You need to add some problems that come with lewd stuff.
Make them embarrassed, and say they are cute instead of sexy.
Make them hold hands,
Actually be gentle and don't just ram it in.
Snuggle a lot.
Kiss shoulders, neck?

uh what? smut is porn. erotica is a pornographic novel containing smut.

if you do not vividly describe the characters fucking then it is not smut. anything else is labled as adult/mature.

A writing blogger I used to read said that the difference is arbitrary and usually boils down to "things I like vs things I don't like"

Technically, there isn't any genre smut in written novels. It is Erotica/adult/mature for novels, per se. Some sites have smut but those are the ones usually more related to anime/comics.

Smut is porn, you are correct. But I called the genre of smut soft porn. Why? Because usually, smut used as a genre is lighter than hentai. Light sabers, not crazy amounts of details, and more flowery language. Usually a plot around the soft porn too. Quick sex scenes at times too, while hentai drags it on forever. Basically, every chapter is a sex scene.

Erotica/hentai/ is the more detailed version of smut to me. Less flowery language. Calling things straight as they are and such. I find erotica way more intimidating than smut. Smut and erotica are called lemon in other places, too.

It isn't about describing the sex scene is about how much detail is in it. Everyone sees genres are different. Let's pick a different one, like a tragedy. Most people read that and say damn, an MC will die, but that isn't what tragedy is. If it only revolved around death, then the world would not be as tragic as it is.
