Why is it that people feel the need to attach meaningless labels to themselves? Up until I had internet at my own house, I never had to deal with people that decided to identify themselves with things like star signs, or other pointless things like that. The closest things I have seen to this in real life are cliques in high school and they weren't as self-absorbed as this shit is.

I knew it exist according to my friends and what little I have seen at school, but as soon as I got the internet, and used it for hobbies and job searching. Then the idiots came in droves, filling my feeds with boring, whiny complaints throwing around certain words to manipulate people into feeling bad and/or farm likes and responses. It amazes me how people are so obsessed with being 'special' or 'unique' that the trend comes to bite them in the ass, and they end up being generic.

It is like people are trying to find problems where they don't exist by coming up with some term to identify themselves with niche labels instead of you know, defining themselves by actions rather than words?

Does anyone else realize this or am I just crazy?

People who don't fit in the dominant norms of a society have a bit more work to do than people who do.

Labels can help people
- Feel that who they are is okay, that it's a 'thing' rather than just 'wrong'
- Access communities, support, information, and activism.

It's all bullshit really, because labels are bullshit really, but it's helpful bullshit for a lot of people in getting to where they need to be.

You could say that about anything relating to human behavior. What is your point?
My point is.
It is like people are trying to find problems where they don't exist by coming up with some term to identify themselves with niche labels instead of you know, defining themselves by actions rather than words?
Not people, but a group of 'specialists' who get paid for nothing, and they need to somehow justify their pays, also, not antagonize the clients so that those clients come back to them.

I might know what you're talking about but give some examples.

Astrological signs, 'Dreamsexual' and other things like it, random pronouns, otherkin identities, people that unironically use sigma male or anything like it. So basically, niche things people cling to, I guess the best thing I could compare it to is materialism but instead of physical objects and brand names it is fandoms, slang terms, made words up words, etc, etc.

People I know who use these labels use it unironically since being seen as cringe tends to piss people off and that's pretty funny if you're into trolling. But yea, there are people who would use it unironically, but unfortunately I don't know em.

That's a wide range of things you brought up, and some are quite valid while others are total bs.

-Astrology has no basis in science and no provable rules, let alone working applications. Given that people that buy into it may use it as basis for wide ranging decisions and tend to also believe into other esoteric bs over provable science I find it really harmful and think its active promotion via stuff like horoscopes in newspaper should stop.

-Sexuality, romance and gender have been squished into binary boxes for a long time and only recently have we started exploring these topics to their full extent. As such, the terminology around these topics is still developing. Please becareful with dismissing this stuff because there are real lived experiences behind them and having labels (and pronouns outside the traditional binary he or she) helps people put a name to their experience and find similar people instead of feeling they are somehow broken compared to everyone else, even if this stuff can sound strange to outsiders.

-Otherkin are a mixed bag, given the many different flavors they can come in. I have yet to see evidence for things like souls, so I don't take people that claim to have the soul of "X" all that seriously. But on the other hand, if we had the technology for elaborate body modifications, I wouldn't look fully human anymore because being human is f-ing booring. I'm actually not sure if that'd put me into the otherkin category, and I don't need it personally, but I don't see a big harm in having a label for something along these lines.

-The whole Alpha and Beta male stuff is, as far as I can tell, a really toxic pushback against the deeper exploration of gender and gender roles and as such bs. Sigma male in turn is a label tucked on to that framework by people who buy into that but don't like that this framework designates them as beta males.

I am not dismissing anything and do not value people or their experiences less for using these labels. People are free to believe what they want to believe, and I will fully support them in their pursuit of happiness and self-worth, I am simply unhappy with the overwhelming toxicity and whining that comes with the territory. Especially when people have a victim complex or guilt people into feeling bad about themselves.

Just some plebos looking for identity after being intentionally deprived of identity derived from family, and community by the powers at hand.

Because their parents didn't love them enough to smack them around for being stupid little shits. Personally, I see it as the epitome of privilege. I WISH I could live a life so comfortable I could go on the internet and bitch about it in public.

Pretty sure it's more like the parent being too busy with life, and leaving them to the ipad and tv where they look for identity in people like Idubbz. Like why are you looking for identity in Idubbz!?
