My main purpose for joining this website was to write a novel. However being a developer by nature, got me curious to see the potential of writing vs revenue for people interested to earn some bucks.

So I was bored yesterday, and I decided to play around a bit . So I collected the data of 200 novels, but decided to share only the ones of over the 1 Million. (this shouldn't be a complete list, there could be more novels with over 1 million view)

Anyways, I hope it doesn't offend anyone , If I do not get kicked out, I will share more analytics later for fun.

Note: The reason why I share this, is maybe it will help you decide if writing novels can bring you an income

Table notes and observations:
- If the novel does not have patreon button then the value is empty
- Unlimited Power – The Arcane Path has low Patreon because it is completed
- If novel has patreon button they are earning something, I did not dive deep why the income could be low except of the case of Unlimited Power (as it is complete)
- I do not understand why Immortal Only Accepts Female Disciples is earning low, even though she seems to be doing everything right

Open question that I might look into later.
- Relation between How many novels do the writer own, and Patreon income
- Patreon income for less views

Otherwise, enjoy

Not "you", not just "anyone". Technically, ANYONE can do it. But that "anyone" requires stamina, persistence, giant hopeful promises for its readers, glowing with potential, has mass appeal, an established reader-base, at the VERY LEAST a year's worth of history, more than 20 chapters, easy to pick-up and engross, newbie friendly, and has at least SOME understanding towards advertising and promoting themselves.

Patreon money isn't some up-for-grabs as others would like you to think. Every 3 figure income you see has unseen litres of blood, sweat, cum, and tears invested behind it to even be conceivable. You'd have to live through a quarter of a decade on the barest of bread and water to even start dreaming of earning a serious slice off Patreon. Unless you hit a jackpot, you have to sacrifice a lot to get to this point, ESPECIALLY if you don't have an alternate income to start off as a base. (Most Patreon earners in this forum have a stable job themselves.)

Don't see me as a party-pooper but as an advisor I strongly suggest you listen: Patreon isn't a wellspring. It just accepts payment in the form of undying commitment and perseverance.

Yeah, He Who Fight With Monsters makes a lot of money. I saw that one day. The guy was making daily 2.5k words chapters (before December 18th). Plus, the quality is really great.

Royal Road novels make more money as a rule of thumb. However SH has a better reader base ( RR has too many complainers and snowflakes). at least imo.

Well... there is no way in hell I can write 4 or 5k chapters every 2 or 3 days for months, let alone years, without burning out with no ashes to remain.
To be honest, the earning figures are cool and all but probably only those who can give full time commitments can even hope to touch three digits.
Hobbyists like me will only be able to half ass everything, and people do not give away their hard earned money for half-assing. I know I wouldn't. But it would be fun if I am able earn enough to support 2 or 3 of my favorite authors (not that I have a Patreon or anything)

Depends on the situation. I started writing during my last year of uni. I have projects, master's thesis and 2 novels currently on my head. At first, I was writing 3 chapters of 2k a week, then 2x6k and 2x3k when I had some time, and now due to all the responsibilities, I fell to 1x6k and 2x3k a week.

That said, I'm a person who finds writing stuff enjoyable over anything else in my life. I didn't start with earning money in mind. I started to write down the ideas I keep in my head so that I don't forget them. Yet, with regular and constant releases I was able to reach 570$ on Patreon just recently. Some of that definitely was pure luck of course.

So yeah, kinda anyone can have a go at it as long as their English is decent and they find a good number of words per chapter they are comfortable with. I started with 2.5k a chapter and couldn't believe how people go higher. Two months later, I have now issues writing less than 7k words in a chapter. With time, comes experience and it gets easier to write.

Anyway, even if you are writing as a hobby, partially like me but I do take my schedules very seriously, you still can earn a bit from it if the work is aimed at the correct audience. Fantasy for both RR and SH. LitRPG also for both. SH likes more chill and adventurous stories where characters are often successful. RR prefers dark, tough, realistic stories and will shit on the previously mentioned ones, but give your novel some crafting and slow progress and you are set.

There are many tips to use and it all depends on how serious a person is about writing.

This kinda gave me hope to invest more time into writing but after looking more into your reply, i kinda lost that motivation anymore.

It might be that it lit up some will to invest more time to writing more chapters but now i feel like i would continue being a lazy ass and basically just write some chapter or two sometime in some future.

Just thinking aloud to myself (coming from a business world at my mid-thirties), why do not two, three people team up on one novel and share revenue

There is a lot of value into this, especially if both (or all) agree that they like each others style.

Here is the the possible value they would both/all get:
* Better commitment
* More ideas
* Less stress and less effort as you split the workload on two
* guaranteed higher revenue due to higher availability (less likely to burn out)

15 years ago at least it was a trend to do chat Role Play, so this could be a nice idea too

I've been using RR for a few months now, saw a lot of comments, wrote a lot of comments, and barely saw any of these 'snowflakes'. Were you talking about the reviews there? If so, I think being critical is much more helpful for the author's growth than just gushing out praises at every syllable. Also, thought that both sites shared a lot of the same user base, was I wrong?

About the userbase, yeah, it's shared, but there's more on RR, and it's different. Majority of RR dislikes what majority of SH likes. And when they don't like something, they do everything in their power to show that, like downvoting every single positive review and upvoting negative ones. And of course, "normal" negative reviews exist, but the mentioned "snowflakes" exist and are strong in their beliefs. Calling someone's work "unrealistic author's jerk-off material" doesn't really bring anything to the table, or saying that since the story has a grammar mistake in the synopsis, you can already predict the quality of the content (even though there's no mistake and the person goes silent after getting taught that some verbs can have two correct forms because there are at least two English styles, leaving his incorrect review to mislead people anyway).

Anyway, every opinion and review is subjective, both negative and positive, but yeah, you can expect way more people who voice out their complaints on RR and some of them can be jerks. I mentioned the story themes for each site in my post above and it's not just an empty guess based on one or two stories.

But honestly, it's good laughs sometimes. It's great when you receive negative comments/reviews that actually point out the stuff. There's no progress without getting to know the potential issues. But a lot of negative feedback on RR doesn't contain that. It's usually the neutral ones that do. And to meet those negative comments or reviews you need to browse through the stories that RR dislikes, so pretty much almost anything related to eastern media unless done in an amazingly unique way and written like someone with 5 years of experience.

Don't worry man. Just invest it. Doomp it. You'll see the light at the end of the tunnel; if that's what you're striving for.
