If they're in a relationship, it counts. By that, I mean they acknowledge that they're in a relationship. Dating without sex counts. Sex without dating doesn't count. Forced marriage doesn't count. 'Close but not sure if they're friends or more' doesn't count.

Depends on what you plan to do with your story. If you're looking for a fast-track way of gaining a harem, enslave them/quantify their feelings (like levels and titles in litRPGs). If you're looking for that 'TLC' (tender, loving care), you'll have to build up your MC's traits to make him likeable. You don't need to jump immediately to sex to make it a harem, really.

Psh, not at all. The mc doesn't even need to touch any of the girls, let alone marry them. So long as the audience knows the girls around the mc like him and are trying to get his affection then it's a harem. The best example I can give is sword art online, where it SHOULD just be a romance between Kirito and Asuna, but there's another 3-6 girls (depending on the season) who are obviously crushing on Kirito hanging around them. The harem tag has long degraded to being used to describe a certain atmosphere rather than a complicated relationship status. Now, if you want it to be a GOOD harem, that's an ENTIRELY nother story, but since you seem to be asking about the baseline requirements, the reader's knowledge that the girl likes the mc and wants him is about all you need to add a girl.

Requiring that they either marry or have sex are both elements of the original definition of "harem," not the anime definition.

The anime/manga/WN/LN definition of "harem" has changed quite a bit from the original term to have a meaning that's somewhat synonymous with "love triangle with more than 3 players," particularly when it's all members of one gender focused on a single member of the opposite. (Although, that's not completely necessary. Rumiko Takahara, the legend of a manga artist who essentially pioneered the harem genre, had a jumbled mess in Ranma 1/2 that involved 3 harems focused around 2.5 characters in an absolutely insane web of love dynamics that would melt your brain if you tried to follow it.)

You're not some JP light novel writer who are forced to include "Dense protagonist", "Harem sheanigan", "Legal Loli" & "beach bikini" fanservice inside your story, just so your "Watered Down Seinen fantasy" can gain more viewer, especially perverted readers.

Those JP writer need to write those "Harem" for fanservice. It's a frickin click bait to serve and gain the money of those perverts who may not read the Light Novel otherwise.

You're an aspiring writer who wants to gain audience of International experienced reader with your Decent or Good story. Harem is reserved if your reader is also JP LN readers.

It's impossible for females to just love and accept this dense protagonist just because he's nice at the right time.

Read female love fantasy and you will see that females need to receive "high rank kindness" multiple times from "Handsome+ big muscle" Male Lead before they start considering to accept the Male Lead love or not. And even then there's goin to be lots of conflict within their feeling before they accept the Male Lead.

And now, the dense protagonist that barely has muscle and only does "high rank kindness" once and hope to be accepted as Lover ?

Not trying to offend you man by saying the otherwise, but there are a lot of cases in my school where I handled an 'indecisive' student being fought over by girls around him. And I was like, "What the f--k? This boy is still in high school yet girls are willing to fight (and force me to suspend my class) just for him?"

It's impossible for females to just love and accept this dense protagonist just because he's nice at the right time.

Yeah, as a teacher, I saw this happen in my school (a public one) a lot of times. The guy's...nice (average grades, and looks, prolly mix in a measure of humor too) is all their reason to run after him. (And vice versa too, with some cases of guys gunning after a girl.

Because this is my honest opinion, so I will rant on abit. Why harem if the male MC is just going to leave the girls hanging? I thought that the wet dream of underaged boys, other than Super Saiyan, is to have a high body count? I get that this might be something of unhealthy possessive attitude and Makoto from School Days taught us about "fuck around and find out", so most male MCs just stop before popping the seal but still want to hoard. Thus the entire situation becomes a bunch of girls orbiting around the male and no more further steps are taken, the girls are now ornaments that only focus on a single entity while the dense motherfucker continues his way to pull in more satellites.

It feels odd to me at least. To use the word reserved for a guy having intimate relationships with the surrounding women and Japan sterilized the word into an "will they won't they" issue. It also turns into a selection game for said male, like how the ancient chinese emperor would decide to see who he was "befriending" for the night.

This is just my two cent but a friend-more-than-just-friend situation between a male and a bunch of females fumbling for said male's affection is rather off putting. Either you take the step forward and go "only a child would choose one, I pick all!" or just friendzone, strictly friendzone.

...if I may try to explain why there are some that led to 'harem' situations irl, I guess it stems from the 'indecisiveness' of the person. I mean, before, I was one. See, in my old teaching days, I was the sample of the 'weird teacher' trope, but I did treat my students kindly. And, as my work required contact with people, it's not a surprise that there are cases where I ended up having a student like me (romantically, that is).

Honestly, I don't know what to do. I'm a freakin' 'young adult' and I don't know how to deal with the feelings of teenagers, at least, if it is directed towards me. So, I just tried to ignore those feelings--though it's obvious, just like your typical 'dumbass' harem MC. I don't want to hurt them, see?

Well, most of the time it worked, ignoring and not talking about it. Time would pass, and they'd forget I even existed. But there was a time it got worse (yandere-level worse), I had to hire the services of a lawyer (one of the reasons I also took up law later on).
