The rules here are less restrictive for adult authors than other sites. That leads to more posting here and readers interested in adult works following the novels. Novels that don't have such restrictions have probably just moved off site since they can get more readers elsewhere.

I've been here for some time. I read fairly regularly and haven't had any issues finding new novels. that is until recently. it's not that there are no new works. its just that the majority of what i find is smut. if i filter out smut I only find novels that haven't been updates in months. it wasn't always been like this. honestly it's only recently that it has gotten this bad.

is this just my imagination or has anyone else noticed something similar in their favorite genre/s.
I set my release filter to remove the following:

* LitRPG
* Isekai
* Fanfiction
* Harem
* And obviously, Smut

And I still see daily updates.

I agree with your observation. From what I have been able to observe so far, stories with smut outnumber the amount of non-smut works present on this site.

There are approximately 11,650 works on this site. Of those, approx. 1,950 have the Smut genre labeled, and approx. 5,475 have the sexual content warning turned on.

Those 11k works are 4 times lower than RR
Ps: just to nail down the topic i just posted a new chapter... With the R18 warning...

mhhh, I have to be honest, I find quite a few non-smut stories but most of them are little known that is why I always have to search actively for them. Outside the recent updates section, cuz even if they are regularily updated many of them are slowly updated.

Just check the trending tab. There isn't a single one with Smut today, and 3 or 4 fanfics. Also the missuse of the smut genre is pretty common. Maybe 1/3 should have the tag, and the rest should just be labeled adult. It's almost like the authors have the same problem as the readers and don't read the descriptions of the genres and tags they put on their novel.:blob_hmm_two:

My point is that the idea of there being more smut than non-smut here is not accurate. Even taking all stories with the sc warning, we're close to half and half, but still leaning toward non-smut. And yes, the numbers may be off due to mislabeling. I've seen stories that should have the sc warning that don't. I've seen stories with the smut genre but not the sc warning, to which I squint my eyes and say "huh?" But I've seen much less of that than accurate labeling. Most people who write smut want people to know it.

I would like to ask those looking for non-smut and think there's a lack of it - when you do find something you like, how much do you engage with it? I ask because as a smut writer myself (well, a romance writer who doesn't drop the curtain on the intimate scenes) I find that my spicy chapters get more reader engagement, and it's often crickets on the other chapters between. So I wonder if pg stories are getting much reader engagement at all (does it happen for chapters with whatever makes your genre exciting? Fight scenes? MC levels up? Grows a tail? IDK what you litrpg kids are into, I'm spitballing.)

Low reader engagement is really depressing for authors, and could be responsible for all the dropped stories, indefinite hiatuses, and authors deciding to try smut thinking it will get more engagement, and idk if readers understand the power they have to keep stories going. I can only advise you to get active as readers. Comment - you don't have to write a sonnet, "Thanks for the chapter" or just an emoji are better than nothing. (I've historically been bad at commenting myself, and I'm trying to do better.) Hit that favorite button. I know that's supposed to work differently here on SH than votes or likes on other sites, but honestly that's the only way I know for sure that people are reading sometimes.

The reader/ author relationship is a two-way street. Encourage the authors writing what you like, and you'll have more of what you like to read.

(Also, you guys don't know how good you have it here. SH isn't like a lot of other sites that are ALL werewolf smut ALL the time. I love urban fantasy and I'm not opposed to the occasional werewolf, but 10,000 of them is excessive.)

Does Ecchi stuff count as sexual content? I think in some semblance it does so I added the sexual content warning to the story. Even though there's some Characters being naked but overall it's clean (no one engages in intercourse here), fun, and a bit of manga/anime trope-ish. :blob_teehee:

Does my story have a really low number of tags? Yeah, I may add other tags later if I think it's relevant to the story, but I could be missing tags that are out there that could be used...

I've glossed over the list of possible tags that can be added to a piece and it's an incredibly extensive selection.

I've neglected the language tag as I've actively avoided using it with the characters. Language in the story is implied and honestly if people want to read the story with the language included they can literally insert X word here or there, wherever they want. Inserting: "(character name) cursed" Is a great way to imply that the character was saying something far worse than a simply "You jerk" or "Shut up"

I have the isekai tag also because, well, the MC gets taken to another world through his antics. I won't spoil anything big here in case people reading my story are here reading this but there's a good tie in to come up later on. The old world doesn't get forgotten forever like it does with most isekai stories out there. There's a solid reason for the isekai world to exist :blob_cookie:

Either way I don't think that limiting yourself based on certain tags is really the best way to go about finding the "Right" story. It weeds out more than just the trash sometimes (maybe even a lot of the times) when you restrict yourself to only certain tags or genres.

I havent paid close attention but I dont run into smut too often, but usually that's cause i avoid the tags fairly methodically.

As an author who has dropped off the face of the planet, sometimes shit happens. My host had to deal with a drama crisis for about a year and we didnt know where we were going to live that year.

Fortunately that seems to have resolved, but theres something else looming over the horizon... I should be able to get some more work out before then though.

I also find that a lot of underrated authors here, and I think one of my favorite reads on here has like 10x fewer reads than it should. So definitely take a dive if youre worried
