That depends. If you've got a great story for an example, it probably won't turn out badly. But I've seen more than story when the author clearly had no idea what they were writing about, and it shows in every aspect of writing, not just smut.

I'd say that real experience doesn't necessarily make your writing better, but stops you from commiting both blatant and unknown or obscure mistakes.

What is the biggest mistake you came across, cause something tell me it is gonna be funny

Hard to recall when I'm called out like this. It's not related to sex at all, but one stupid thing I've seen was in a story about boxing, where the main character sometimes knocked people out with a single punch or made them fall like ragdolls easily, then she got to smacking a guy's head and apparently he remained standing and conscious if disoriented after a few dozen hooks.

Might add something specifically sexual if I remember one.

I actually recently wrote something, a short story between a character of mine and a character of a friend's having sex.
And I think, actually. No.

When I was still a imaginative, curious little virgin boi, I treated my view of sex like a holy grail from god. Every action the character took, the breath they hold, even the giggles they let out when making a mistake or touching something too hard. It was all imaginative and that's why it's better. It's not hundred percent realistic and it's just so much more artsy and butterflyish in that way ye know what I'm sayin' bruv? But now that I view it as something... human, it's something that is very human, down to earth. I begin to think about my experiences, how this scene isn't realistic and it bugs me, how this action, these words they said are not really what I'd or my partner would say and it even bugs me more. Even though; yes, it's fiction and fiction are meant to be fun and not heavy on realism, but there's just something that made my mind hold back on certain things.

So yeah, if this Sunday you're getting laid, try finishing a smut scene on Saturday so that you have good material to rely on later because you're gonna downgrade.

REMEMBER WRITERS! NO HOES.

I’m a firm believer that real life sexual experience or an embarrassing amount of genuine research (not merely watching porn or such as there is misinformation on those) to understand male and female anatomy, as well as various sexual activities and how they work, are required to make good smut.
Given that I have neither the former (I don’t count sexual harassment as experience) and I had started to, but chickened out, on the latter, I am fairly certain any smut I write will be of dubious quality.

Not really. For smut having watched more than zero porn clips is more than enough. You gotta know where the hole is, gotta know what to insert and you gotta abstractly know how both hole and hole-insert might look like. Everything else is just describing between moans and screams how good/bad a character is feeling during it.

I don't know. I just read a lot of hentai, and now I write smut.
Considering that there are still people reading my smut, I would bravely say that you don't really need to have experience to write readable smut.
As to whether having experience make you write them better... I think it depends on the person and their experience.

Yes and no
Maybe maybe not
It can help but even without, people can still do it well.

For me i can only say : Women are the best ones for writing SMUT or psychology
BOTH novel-written smut AND doujinshis (with a female lead)

BTW
do you know about "angelyeah" ? Check out the Sakura x Naruto video. You will see how big is the difference of a sex scene when its a woman creating it.

As both a venerable sex god and an amazing author, I think experience helps. That doesn't make it a requirement though.

Not going to lie, that just sounds like any smut you make is going to be reeeally bad.

Enthusiasm beats everything. If it's at least sincere, I can laugh at the honest mistakes.
Some people get too wrapped around writing a biology piece instead of something actually interesting.
And some people write with one hand, five fingers shoved into whatever hole they have while going on and on about the 'feeling' and the 'emotion' while I, the reader, cannot even tell what the hell is going on half the time because descriptions are nil.
Honestly, I'll take a bad sex scene any day. If you can't make it all 'hot and sexy', making it funny is the next best thing (if not preferable). Real life is entirely inconsequential.

Smut, just like Porn, is imagination.
When you're writing about it, you should be writing not about your actual experiences, but about your expectations. Unless you're writing a diary. In which case, we all know, we will judge you for what you have done. Not for your imagination as a writer.
Sure imagination arises from the possible, and therefore, someone who is inexperienced will believe that the impossible is possible while they are writing. But that is fiction. It is also something that happens in real world porn, to make the impossible seem possible.
I believe the only thing people should be careful is to not let their inexperience make them write things that go beyond what can actually be "real."
As for the experienced, they have many times lost the "innocence" for real creativity. They know what it is like, what is possible, what they can not do. And they let their nots influence them more than what they learn is possible more often than not.
