I tend to stay away from female MC and stories that are too hard to immerse myself in. Fanfic, Boys Love, and transgender, too.

Or simply any MC that is hard to relate, really.

I won't read BL, GB, and GL. Cheat systems are on the verge of becoming a red flag as well. I think cheat system tag is called "System Administrator" here and on NU.
What's NU? I've never heard of that, and I'm intrigued at another site to share my stories on.

What do you mean?
I mean quite literally that. I don't recognize any of the authors listed here, nor do I see any of the authors I do know. I'm connected to quite a few authors on this site, RR, and r/HFY, but I don't see any of them there. Some are quite successful, too, with thousands of readers on their stories.

Oh, that's because NU is ONLY for translations of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean novels. I think there are translations from other languages as well, but it's mostly those three.

Ah, I gotcha. Nifty that there's a site for that.

Another tidbit. NU and SH are both made by one person, Tony. That's why you will find NU promoting SH stories on a sidebar.
I can see the marketing degree Tony has is doing something.

i don't mind the transgender tags. writing is a personal outlet for many writers, so of course they're going to write about the struggles they experience in the real world. i even do it myself.
futanari, harem, and smut tags are ones i tend to avoid. same with the BL (just not interested in that). the porny ones are annoying because i'm not looking for sex, i'm looking for other perspectives, or for different ways of looking at the same topic. i don't mind the romance ones if it's not a heavy focus of the work. mostly i just stick to non-human protags, monsters tend not to have those sorts of problems.
school life, nobles, and overpowered protaganists are basically just standard mary sue fodder. there's a million like it, following the same tropes and patterns. not interested.

Over the past two years, I've found that I generally dislike reading stories that incorporate video game mechanics in a "leveling system". I can understand their appeal, but there's a more fundamental issue I have with RPG mechanics: It's an idea that somewhat discourages discipline when it comes to a long-term commitment, when there are no immediate tangible benefits. I know it's rather popular, and I don't look to change that. But I will rarely, if ever, read any myself, nor do I ever plan to write one myself.

The genderbender tag is one that I tend to look at with both optimism and skepticism, and as a result I've been drafting up plans to write one. I have not been particularly satisfied with the takes and interpretations of that many genderbender stories in the past; most of that is the protagonist or the genderbent character getting accustomed to their new bodies unusually quickly.

Smut and similarly associated tags, I don't read. If I wanted smut, there are different places I go to for that.
