Personally, I don't know why they do it.

Some dudes like balls in holes but wish it was balls in their holes.

Except they don't have the proper holes so they make an MC that does.

Some do it for views, others genuinely want to explore the topic and how GB can affect a person.
Don't lie, we all know people do it because it sales, only like 1/20 actually explore GB affect on a person
Boys like lesbian porn and they want to put themselves as the self insert protagonist.
Woman like lesbian porn more than men

I agree with you, but I don't want to start a conflict with anyone(as I don't have the actual stats) and I only listed two reasons out of many.

Sometimes, the writers are transgender as well. Or at least trans-curious.
Othertimes, its a genre they enjoy to read.

Ultimately, though, it comes down to "they enjoy it" or "they feel their target audience would enjoy the story more with it."

Sales.
Years ago I made story that was a genderbender, and it was popular. Kept it up with other stories, and kind of fell into the habit.

Because I like reading gender-bender, so it’s only natural I would write one, right? As to why I like it. Well, we have to go back in time a bit, back to when I started getting into these light novels and web novels thingy, especially isekai.

I started with Japanese isekai light/web novels, which most of them feature a very unfair gender role. Just like in a lot of anime, the protagonist is some dense dude with no spine—not all of them, thankfully—and the ladies are all hot-blooded, highly emotional idiots who jump to the conclusion very quickly. (Go watch some harem anime and you’ll know what I mean.)

The ladies in these stories just abuse our innocent little guy throughout the entire story, while our innocent little guy can’t do anything about it because he’s too awkward and spineless and powerless—funny how this works; even if the mc is the strongest in the whole universe, the old joke about “even stronger than the strongest man in the world is the strongest man’s wife” seems to apply here perfectly.

That’s where gender-bender comes in.

I didn’t have many expectations at first, but when I started reading one out of curiosity, I instantly noticed the difference. A very, very huge difference, indeed.

Although the protagonist is still the same innocent little guy with no spine and too dense for his own good, once he turns into a cute girl, instead of looking miserable, he or she somehow appears very kawaii~ And the relationships between him—or her—and his girls are different as well. For one, he doesn’t get abused anymore! Wow, what a surprise!

These differences were a breath of fresh air then. That’s how I got hooked to this gender-bender thing; thus ended up writing one in the process.

For me I like it because it's a nice way to show vulnerability
I made my character younger and bent their genders to make it so that they're more vulnerable, weaker and less prepared. He can no longer do what he could before alone, she needs help. I'm not saying either gender is more emotional or better, but but rather it's generally seen as men should be stronger, more stoic, do not need help, and I want to just strip that away, strip away stoicism strip away those thoughts.
Of course there are better ways to depict vulnerability, there are flaws to this way, but that doesn't mean it's bad or do not work
And of course, views :blob_popcorn:
