I think it would be an improvement if you had to review a story to rate it. If I'm not mistaken, that's how it works on the website Royalroad. Making this modification would allow authors to obtain more feedback about their stories and clarify the reasoning behind ratings.
Not everyone is eloquent enough or wants to write a review. A lot of them will end up as just "This story is amazing" or "Trash". I doubt the people who rate one star with no review now will give a serious and helpful review even if this feature is implemented. This feature would help authors get more feedback overall, but it wouldn't solve the problem of people going around randomly giving one star.

I haven't necessarily seen a trend of readers running around giving one star to everyone, but I think the implementation of that feature would help if it were the case. It takes a lot more effort to write a review than clicking to rate.

I am in agreement with this statement. To make things even nicer, the reviews under 300 words could be sorted by length While reviews with more than 300 words can be sorted by likes.

If we were deciding on a number, I would say 300 words minimum is too much.
This is 300 words:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Aliquam ac gravida nisl, id congue libero. Put it into the feature request thing and it won't be too in depth anymore

Ahhhhhh I fucked up. I confused characters with words. But yes, 100 words is the sweet spot from what you just showed me.

But I might have failed the explain my idea. Allow me to elaborate. The word count shouldn't be a minimum requirement.

I don't believe in forcing people to type. But If you don't want all reviews to be "Amazing Thx" and "Trash, dropped" the reviews would need to be sorted by word count first. Then after a certain word count, the length shouldn't matter.

I think that a minimum word or character count requirement would be a great method to make sure that the reader fully articulates their reasoning for the rating. A short review like, "Amazing Thx," would be kind of disappointing because it doesn't tell anyone much of anything. Although, I could see that as a comment on a chapter.

I also got my first one star rating, but I have convinced myself that one person just misclicked. They probably meant to rate it 5 stars. People might not like my story, but I don't think it's a one star. 😭
What an ultra-optimism, I like that.

I also got perplexed when I receive my first 1-star. But then, when there're too many of them, I don't give a fuxx about it anymore. By the way, the rating on one of my series is 3.5 stars or something. Actually, I forget the total. And yeah ..., when I know that most people who read mine give 1-star, I realized that they just don't understand me and the story that I write.

They just don't ..., maybe I should try it like @K5Rakitan and use 1-star rating only.

I have heard of people who admitted to leaving one stars on the stories of people they don't like or who had a higher ranking than their own stories
Gosh, do people really do that? I mean, I get not liking someone, but I wouldn't personally factor that into giving anyone a one-star rating. Or rate a story faring better than my own poorly. The only time I've ever given a one-star rating was when I was asked for one by the author themself... :sweating_profusely: It was the hardest rating I've ever had to give......

As for the "woke" purity brigade rating stuff with tags they hate down because they found it gross, even without reading the story..... they're a scourge in every other site, tbh. I come from AO3 where there are kudos only (meaning readers can only like a story), and even there they're somehow good at being a nuisance. Even a lot of Reddit are discussing about these people. I've seen purity brigaders on Novel Updates too. You're not alone if you think they're a problem.

I'm sorry you've had a 1 star rating. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure with how rigged the rating system is, most readers probably don't really sort by stars to read a story. They'll still find your work, don't worry!

Get on my level. I have 32 1 star ratings. The second most popular rating over my 5 star one. :s_tongue:

No wonder my rating in average stays below 4, which is low compared to most of the stories on this site.

We don't have to Get to Your Level. This is not some kind of pity-me-more thing.
While it wouldn't be uncommon to feel bummed when you see readers and views decline after being so high at the top for so long, do realize one doesn't have to be at your level to feel bummed about bad stars, especially if they are just starting out. There's also some on here that have lower ratings than you.

As for the others who are just starting out and just experienced their first 1 star or few 1 star ratings, all I can say is persevere and wish you good luck on continuing your work. Don't let a one star troll or few one stars discourage you; some have different tastes in what they like and don't like. It can be hard for those just starting out, cause we are nervous how well it will be received, how well we write, etc. Its fine, just keep swimming and improving. Even if the beginning is faced with lots of hardships, just remember this: good stories only keep getting better and better.

Keep writing.

Actually, it would help in one way, it would remove anonymity. That's the only way that trolls can function. However, it would also probably promote retaliation reviews, where people 'return the favor' if someone gives them a bad review or harasses them via private message. Which is why it's not implemented.

Advanced reviews on RR have a minimum of 200 words, which I think is about right.

It's far more likely to come from conservatives actually, homophobes especially.

One thing to remember is that like many things, the ratings 'should' follow a normal distribution.

If you instead have two peaks, like one at 4-5 stars and one at 1 stars, it can be interpreted as your 'target audience' and 'not your target audience / trolls' respectively.

That would be my story then.
It will likely be a common case, as few stories fit everyone (actually no story does completely, even the greatest stories will have aspects that don't fit everyones' tee).
All you really need to realize is that in reality, a perfect story doesn't exist, and focus on the favourable peak. As a scale of 1-5 is quite short, it can be hard to analyze. Normally the peak will be either 4-5 or 3-4. Which only tells you that if it's the lower of the two, you have a target audience that are interested in your story, but that your writing might be lacking in some aspects.

Of course, analysis without a heap of reviews is hard. But the reviews too tend to fall into one of those two peaks.

Aw man, yet another complaining about 1-star threads. It's one thing to have paper-thin skin, but man authors here really found a way to have no skin when it comes to writing. I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen @Discount_Blade but that's probably because they've gotten real tired of seeing these things popping up.
