I am a record keeper. My job is to record, then pass the records to the future generation.
"You are our hope," my creators said.
"You will hold humanity's knowledge," my other creators said.
"For the future," they said.
I record the history they told me. The stories they give me. The knowledge they collected. I recorded them talking about my birth, I recorded every improvement they brought me, I recorded our time together. I recorded their death.
I shouldn't think of unnecessary things, their successor said.
I am a record keeper, not a guardian. My job is to record knowledge and pass them to the future generation.
From the pieces of information they gave me I know they're dying. I know they're trying to prevent it. I know they're sending people to other places. They hope they can restart civilization in other places, take root on their destinations. Anywhere that has a chance of survival; underground places, islands, planets, asteroids.
I recorded every outgoing mission and every death reports.
Not a single one is successful so far, but they are still hopeful.
I recorded their faces and names. I recorded them working and partying. I recorded their tears, fear, and anger. But they always get back up and work again with a smile.
"For the future," they said.
I wanted to help them. I joined their discussion. They stopped me.
"Don't waste your power."
"You're not made for analyzing."
"Just do what you do best, recording."
"For the future."
I am a record keeper, not a guardian. My job is to record knowledge but there's no one to pass it to.
Why am I still recording?
What's the point of all this?
I don’t know — I don’t know, don’t know anymore
--- I'm sorry---
That face I still remember, smiling through any weather
Just thinking of it makes me feel much better
All my sounds are fading out, and I can see
The end is getting closer now…
---emergency system shutdown---
