As you can see, this time some more new data- average views! Average rating! Though due to big spread, average is not the most useful data point here... but you can see that for yourself later.

Percentile

Quick explanation to those that might have forgotten their high school education: Percentile tells you at what point you get above X percent of people. So a pair of 80 percentile and 11 600 views, means that if you have 11 600 views, your novel has more views than 8/10 of all novels on scribblehub. It's nice because it tells you what is your position relative to others.

Log graphs

Most graphs in here use log on their vertical axis. I'm sorry but I'm too lazy to write 200 words in simple terms on why this is better way to represent this type of data, just trust me.

Most interesting from the new stats to me - It seems that super majority of all novels are between 1 000 and 3 000 words (60%) Only 7% go above 4 000. Now I feel a bit bad about my average of 800 words. On the graph you can also clearly see a positive correlation between average length, and position in ranking... until a point that is.

If I take on some drugs and snort the rest of it, would I be able to understand half of the content? No, even one third of it is fine if I can look a bit smarter.

 I've been too afraid to ask, but as a newbie here.... is there any way to check where my novel ranks in popularity? I can't seem to find how/where that ranking is. I mean, I can see the top novels but I can't find where my novel ranks in relation to others. Is that not in stats at all?

You need a Maybe choice on the poll, for me it depends on how I feel at the time. The stats were fascinating though. Is it possible for Completed versus Abandoned to be separated out?

Not a veteran in this site so I might not know it but from what I know, you can't search specific stories in the rankings. Although you can scroll in it here, if you have the patience

Then there is the choice where you can do find it manually here...

@Reisinling You did it again.

Ahem, time to bring in my expertise. I love maths and always been my A subject so this is fun to dumb down for anyone who wants to know as in the previous post.

Goal: I consider being in the top 30% as already being good for your novel, and a reasonable target to do. It's actually isn't a high bar to do for authors on this site.

Average Stats
Firstly, can we do a median? That seems more accurate to go with that average.
So for the first section, I won't say much and will skip that until you change. If you ever will. If you could even get a median graph, I am much happier to analyze that.

Views
As I said previously, just hitting 10k views is more than good enough for all authors. This makes you about close to the top 20% of ALL novels on the site.

If that's too hard to aim for, just half of that, at 5k, already sets you around the top 30% already.

So for those of you small authors, you have quite a good hope.

Chapters
Simply fill up the entire row of chapters on the first page that people see, in the default setting, which is set at 15 chapters. That kind of aim is far more than enough to set you at the top 30% of ALL novels on the site.

I was right in the previous post that people only wrote mostly for the initial dopamine they got from the beginning of publishing a book. However, the majority struggles to continue afterwards as the excitement will slowly die down afterwards. Whatever the reasons they have.

Favourites
This is the easiest among all the stats for people to actually aim for. Just get about 50-100 readers, and likely you will also get 10 favourites constantly on all your chapters, giving you the top 30% of the site. End of story.

Chapter Length
This one isn't so bad either. Just need 2k words to be top 30%, and twice at 4k to be already about the top 8% of novels.

The 2nd graph implies that you don't need to write so long just to have a lot of views. Most tend to be about 1.5k-2.5k words, just to be extremely successful. This is a reasonable length that the authors can aim for and not worry about being too long or too short.

This is good though since people have hardly the time to read extremely long chapters. This applies to Authors themselves when it comes to making a chapter.

The 3rd graph should have been dropped for the extreme end since it's extremely small and hard to infer from that clutter.

Rating
Not surprised.

This is why I think complaining about one-star ratings, even though valid, is something people shouldn't do. Because people are more willing to give 5 stars than 1 star.

Your feelings are still valid though. But just don't be some God Writer thinking that every criticism is invalid. Your novel can never be perfect

You are right in your inference which I observed whenever I read. More readers = More 1 star.

Just suck it up, authors. Their opinions on your story are just as valid as what you have written

Last Update
This is why we need a discontinued or some kind of status to differentiate active novels and others. Like an automatic thing so that people won't come across dead novels.

The fact that there are only about 300+ novels active in less than a month is ridiculous, and much more so at half the year of 1000 novels.

I hope this kind of feature can be implemented someday.

Conclusion
All in all, given how Scrriblehub is new, the bar set to be considered successful and doing decent on the site isn't high at all.
1. You don't need to consider and aim so high for a number of readers to be doing decently. A small dedicated reader is far above average on the site.
2. People are generous in giving ratings. Complaints are valid of low stars, but shouldn't feel too hurt about it.
3. Just need to hit 5 digits or even half for total views to be doing quite well already.

Your novel is rank 2060 according to views at the moment, although that will probably raise quite quickly if you add more chapters. Ranks 1174 in terms of readers.

Chapters

~20% of novels are dropped after 1 chapter. Less than half reach chapter 10. It’s to be expected I guess? Still.. slightly sad.

Wrog horizontal label - its not pos in total views ranking, its position in ranking of avg favorites. Basically it shows you how many novels there are with each average.

Avg chapter length

Most interesting from the new stats to me - It seems that super majority of all novels are between 1 000 and 3 000 words (60%) Only 7% go above 4 000. Now I feel a bit bad about my average of 800 words. On the graph you can also clearly see a positive correlation between average length, and position in ranking... until a point that is.

Rating (only top 3 000, meaning above 2 000 total views)

I dropped novels that had less than 2 000 views, as their ratings seemed completly random. As you can see, most people on this website are quite kind to authors!

The red line is trend line - it shows pretty clearly that the more views you have, the more likely it is someone is going to give you a 1. Hopefully, it's not annoyed competing authors.. (It's not me! I swear!)

Time from last update

It seems pretty clear that half of all novels can be considered abbandoned/completed (more than 6 months since last chapter, 64%). Only about 12% are updated at least once a week.

Eh was too lazy to find better colors and map the data better.
Thank you Mr. Snek writer. You're the SH data scientist.

Your novel is rank 2060 according to views at the moment, although that will probably raise quite quickly if you add more chapters. Ranks 1174 in terms of readers.
Thank you! You have a bot or something that can figure that out?

@Reisinling You did it again.

The 3rd graph should have been dropped for the extreme end since it's extremely small and hard to infer from that clutter.
In general I wanted to drop all the full graphs, as the ocasionall outliers tend to break stuff, but then I thought it might be a good idea to show "pre edit"graph, so that people can see WHY I decided to cut some stuff off.

@K5Rakitan - damn you and your data breaking ways!
