A Temporary Snowman
I thought of you on Christmas Eve,
Out there, in lands of blood on gray.
Your son was sad, he would not eat,
He missed you more each passing day.
He understands the world's not right,
And Daddy's gone to make it so.
We stayed together all last night
And prayed for peace and miracles.
When Christmas morning came, it snowed,
We opened presents, talked some more.
And idea seized him- my, he glowed,
Then asked if he could go outdoors.
He spent the better part of day
Collecting snow to pack it high.
You should have seen him smile away,
That snowman made him come alive.
When he was done, he raced inside
And asked me for your old work clothes.
So overwhelmed, I nearly cried,
Then helped him find a fitting nose.
We dressed that pile of snow just right,
And topped it with your old ball cap,
And sunglasses from last July,
The ones you wore to make us laugh.
When all was done, we prayed for you,
Your son felt better - not so sad.
I wish you could have see it, too,
When your son hugged his snowman dad.
