I read that this event 'The Attack of the Dead Men' was suppressed by the Soviets to avoid Imperial nostalgia. Also, since the effects of poison gas was little understood during those times, the horribly disfigured Russians coughing out their own lungs scared the Germans into retreat.

Osowiec only fell when the Russians withdrew to consolidate their forces.
