I once did a visual novel with powerpoint and insisted that I myself as a solo man can do it.

Guess who got the lowest score in that entire project during presentation and being the target for mockery for the rest of the semester?

Though if I can do it again, this time with money for professional, I will do it again of course. If it is just me? No.

Abso*****lutly! Some of my fondest gaming memories include robust gems like Ace Academy and the old New Grounds Dating Sims where there were RPG elements included. I love visual novels. Especially when they're more game-like instead of just you know...A book with pictures and a lot of message window text. Unfortunately, I've always lacked the art skills to make one, and I didn't have the money to make up for my lack of art skills. Still, one day though... One day, you'll all see a strange, zany, scatological, little slice-of-life, cosmic horror-themed, visual novel...Or more likely it'll be an RPG with heavy visual novel elements...(And that's the day this world will rue the day it scorned me and had my schematics for a doomsday machine shutdown! Bwahahaha....)Seriously, though, I probably will make that game one day. I just need to get in a financially sound enough position, to be able to do it right.

For those that don't know, Visual Novels are those chinese powerpoint pornos with choices as the only player agency. I mean are something like a crossbreed of anime and manga. A few of the biggest and best animes were previously VNs, so it might be cool to check them out.

Aaaaaanyway. For those that know what VNs are, have you ever thought about making your own? While it does mean more work as in looking up basic coding and "borrowing" art from somehwere there's a lot of cool things that can be done from a writing perspective.
Ever thought "I wanna do this, but that also sounds really great" or "maybe waifubando B as sole love interest would have been interesting as well"? In Visual Novels you could do all of it (as long as you write it and give it a choice option).
And even a group of people without any experience can do some seriouls great stuff. Look up "Katawa Shoujo" for example.

So yeah, ever thought about it? And if yes, why?
No. I'm too lazy.

I dunno, I always graded stuff like that pretty high, even when stories itself were utter garbage.

Writing actual visual novel is pretty annoying thought. Art aside, which is very big factor by itself, you need to deal with separation of text to screens for it to look good and not too annoying to click throught, and assigning speakers and their images taking quite a while even in specialized engines just because how many times you need to do it. And if you make it better than kinetic novel and add bunch of meaningful player choices with consequences you will deal with writing variations which will increase non-lineary if you have crossing event branches.

P. S. I wrote so much responses to the same person in the last days that I feel like I becoming a stalker. But I swear it's just bunch of coincidences.

Just for future reference: What other things do you "just do"?

This is impressive!
Don't be impressed. They were an incredible money sink and bragging rights that doesn't make for good dinner talk.

Among things I 'just do' is went to school for a theatre degree which was also a mistake.

Yeah not the best of prospects I've heard.

But if your novels are any indication, it did help in some way. Now you just need to write another 30 years to pay off the loans!

Thought? Yeah, often.
Actually doing it? Ehh, I dunno. I wish I can.
One of the reason I wrote instead is because I don't think I can make a VN (or an RPG, for that matter) lmao

Idk why everyone's ragging on the OP and trying to correct them that VNs are Japanese

The one I made is literally a porn game set in ancient china :blob_frown:

A friend of mine is pretty deep down the Visual Novel Rabbit Hole and he always called them "chinese powerpoint porn", but after I looked it up due to feedback here, it turns out to be an insider meme. Sorry about that, folks. I got trolled, it seems.

But to answer my own question: I'm totally planning to turn the story I'm currently writing into a visual novel since I don't do harem stories.

Calling it that is technically not incorrect :blob_hmm: if you're still referring to VNs in general. For a short time, calling anime 'chinese cartoons' was a popular thing to do a while back.
