You probably guess that this thread will not take itself seriously, but WRONG. BAM! expectation subverted!

If you get the reference, then you'll know that this is also a satire, so expectation actually did not get subverted. Double twists!

Anyway, as a reader, I've gained a (useless) ability that can differentiate various novels with just their name alone. After all these years, I've compiled a few of my tricks into this thread.
  • Long Title that is basically Synopsis: you're in for an isekai, comedy, and mostly slice of life.
  • Short, compacted Title that described something: Will take themselves seriously, probably fantasy
  • Title that is a sentence involving "I, me, you, we, us": Romance-focused, usually fluffy
  • Poem-like title: Might be romanticism-type novel, is a tragedy, and should have a hint of mystery
  • One or two grand-sounding adjectives: Xianxia/Xuanhuan
  • Excessive Expression of Love as a title: Yaoi
  • Has words "Chronicles/Tale/Journey/Legend": Fantasy, from zero-to-hero
Okay, that's about it for now.

Ah yes this ability.... I too have some xp in this skill but sadly my level isnt too high. My skill level in judging things by its synopsis is higher. My best skill though is telling if I'll enjoy a novel or have to trudge through it by reading the first chapter (assuming I get past the synopsis and actually read it)

I agree, most titles are grouped like that. It's making it easier for the readers so I dont even try to avoid it :'D

Sounds like some good general rules of thumb, but mine breaks the mold :s_tongue:

Well, I am not sure. I expected smut and I saw smut. :blobtaco:
Smut is a funny thing. You put in just a little, and suddenly you have to declare the entire work smut even though most of it is romantic comedy. I think readers who come for the smut are disappointed by the first five chapters.

So something like......

"They've been talking for the past 5 pages!!!! WHY IS NO ONE NAKED YET??????"

I mean, it's a pretty fine line to thread. Romantic people want their story to be romantic focused while coomers want much sexy sex in theirs. Both pretty much hate each other as their ideologies contradict each other. Then you gotta figure out the marketing; how are you gonna tell the romantic French it's heavily sex related and tell the coomers that there will be more words than cum whilst convincing them it will be worth it?

Exactly! Though I do imply that Seto Kaiba goes off to masturbate in the bathroom Chapter 3 and then orders his personal assistant to bring him new pants.
