The word "algorithm" was used in English to denote the Arabic numeral system since the 1690s. It derives via Middle English "algorisme, augrym", Anglo-Norman "algorisme, augrim", from Medieval Latin "algorismus". The latter is a mangled transliteration of the Arabic الخَوَارِزْمِيّ (al-ḵawārizmiy), meaning "native of Khwarazm", modern Khiva in Uzbekistan.
