Sex, and Smut in Stories

RR doesn't like beta MC, let alone the typical Japanese MC that defeats bad guys and forgives them and hopes for them to change. But that platform also doesn't allow stories to concentrate too much on smuts either. My story also got the same anger just because my MC didn't want to kill his own uncle and cousin. Though he killed the others sadistically.
Mine would be, he's a normal guy summoned accidentally and had no magical abilities or cheat skills of his own. He relies on his mind nd diplomatic skills to navigate conspiracies and situations against him. And yeah, his view on sexual intercourse and marriage are on the conservative side.

My story got rejected there because of smut and on other sites I've had people complain my MC is too shonen despite having sex.
Man, I think they label all 'goody' MC as shounen or beta or cuck. What a time to be alive to witness such culture. 😂😂😂

Royalroad does seem to have much trollier reviewers compared to scribblehub.

And non smut does have a place but generally it is harder to attract people. I actually think litrpg is the closest thing to the smut effect, quick gratfication that people habitually click on to see the numbers grow. So if you want easy views like smut attracts then a litrpg would probably cover it.

Mine is half of it (since my MC background is a royal family) so he can't just having sex with random woman or for meaningless purposes. And he can't just killing people mindlessly since it will affect diplomatic relationship between countries. So sometimes he needs to kill, sometimes he need to do diplomatic way, solve conspiracies quietly, winning the nobles supports, etc. But they want my MC simply kill every enemies. So yeah... It doesn't fit their taste.

It really all depends what you want from your writing: do you want to write what you want or write to secure food on the table? It's also possible to write a deep and meaningful smut fic but the build-up and work needed would just put you in the first category.

It comes down with whether you can live with it. If you're the kind to put your story in a slow-burn with an equally meaningful pay off, you're gonna, at a best case scenario, end up like the Blade Runner films - artistic and visionary but broke as fuck, commercially.

Anyone aware of how Type Moon's earlier visual novel (Like Fate/Stay Night) are marketed as eroges but the best stuff aren't the sex scene? No? And it's because they're afraid it won't sell otherwise?

That slightly off topic point aside I have a great deal of pride in my work and I will never tarnish them with gratuitous smut and stuff for the sake of these kind of people, even if they're the majority (which I fucking doubt).
Mind you I paired almost every characters I made with each other (Usually mostly yuri and more yuri plus one yaoi) so sex scene is easy to implemented in without seeming out of place, but I still focused way more on the story and those sexy time and stuff.
I'd rather avoid adding sex scene because either I wouldn't be taken seriously or it would've been a bunch of pervs flooding my work and I don't want that sort of reputation. I'm not exactly shyed away from smut but I know better to not do so for merketability, I write in sex scene for myself.

That was maybe that's a bit too big of a rant not worth looking through considering I'm not exactly a big deal here, still I don't see why a story oriented story shouldn't have a place on there or anywhere for that matter. I think that guy was just being a bitch more than anything else, I doubt they're the majority.
I honestly don't give two shits as long the story is actually fucking good, I don't see why a genre would prevail quality, so really there should be hope at the end of the road.
(In the end I ended up ranting twice over...)

He would be utterly disappointed to learn that the platform isn't for "plenty of descriptive sex scenes" when a story which is literally a Slice of Life world-building with barely any of them is deemed "too risky" for the site's admin to accept because the title and premise seem slightly weird :blob_joy:

Yeah, that's what I'm aiming for, to be a serious author. Thanks for this view. I could share it to my peers and students.

:blob_evil_two: The best comparison is the film business. After all, have you ever heard about a porn actress that became a grand of cinema?

Cases exist, but they few and in between. The rule is, once a porn actress, always a porn actress. The same is true for smut, once a smut author, always a smut author. You will get success, even financial success, but you will always remain a smut author. Is that what you want to be known for? Maybe.

Dude, the guy can go read literotica or storiesonline works if he wants sex so much. I get it, RRL's for edgy teens with raging hormones who wants sex and violence because their parents would ban them to hell. But seriously, there are times that I would drop RRL works fast because every paragraphs is either laced with sex and/ or violence. Yes I skip words if they gets boring, but if it turns into some orgy fuckfest, I might as well go e-hentai and nhentai for a quick wank.

i just find my lewd scenes too lewd for SH, so I wasn't sure if I could really write smut without turning it into a full blown hentai story.

and there's the thing about lolis since it's kinda controversial in here, i think?

that's why i prefer them to write hentai, especially if it's my fetish.

I like your type. At least, you are honest to yourself. :blob_sir:

Nah, I'm all fine for slow, steady growth for MCs and a small, loyal circle of readers. Thanks for this view.

Oh right! I haven't thought of that. Indeed, there's this thing about 'first-impressions', and it would be difficult to overcome it once you became known for it. Just like how Daniel Radcliffe would always be Harry Potter to everyone, even if he tries other roles, and C.S. Lewis for his Narnia instead of his other works.

I used smut as a plot device in the beginning of my story. As many of my reviewers said, it was connected with the plot. But I've since stopped adding it in. Because at that time, I wasnt taking writing seriously. Now I am. And my parents know it and support me. But with that comes the baggage of them wanting to read it.......and the least to say, it would be super awkward.
Lucky for you. My parents got angry because I wrote. They say I'm like an autistic person who is busy with my own world. But lately they have been less complaining because during the coronavirus we couldn't go out or do things freely either.

Oh yeah, and also my parents also knew that I'm writing a story. They desperately want to read it, but I refused to tell them anything about my story, other than my cover and the stats.
I told some pieces of my first story to my parents and they said the story was too cruel and gorey (since it was war stories). They said I should at least write a more normal story, like a love story in a romantic movie. I don't dare tell them my other two stories ...

At least it is F on F, not F on M, fuck me I need an eye wash and brain bleach.

:blob_aww: Come to my novels then. I have lolis too. They are lovely and innocent.

Well, ever since the coronavirus lockdown, my mother learned that I and my brother are writing, and she's pretty supportive of us. Even would join the conversation about writing. The lockdown is the great equalizer. :blob_aww:

Yeah, if I decided to put smut in my work, I'd also do a proper build-up, rather than carelessly throw it around. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to sex and marriage, and while I do like smut harems, I'm having awkward vibes putting it in my stories. But I can put it there, nonetheless.

I think they got no patience for a proper build-up. I don't know, but for me, it ruins a good story potential.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking as well. In any case, I'd just continue updating my work there, since I already put all the chapters for my first arc on auto-release. Let them piss themselves off because of my shounen 'nakama' protag.

I watched a few shonen anime. Your protagonist is much, but certainly not a nakama type. :blob_melt:

Well, I'm just basing that statement on the review I received.

In any case, what I learned in this thread was to continue writing, know your goals in writing (I prefer to be taken as a serious author), and though small, there's still an audience for this certain type of story.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
