I find it’s easier to do more shorter chapters than fewer longer ones. My release rate is technically 7 chapters per week but I could not fathom actually writing a chapter with more than 1.5k words. It’s just not something I could do, I don’t write like that. It really depends on what kind of author you are. Some are quite able to just sit and write for several hours straight (not me) and others write inhumanly fast (also not me).
But since my chapters are all about 1k words, I find it much easier to write them. They are short enough to write a chapter in one sitting but not spend so many hours on a single chapter that I burn out. (I’ve gotten it down to about an hour per chapter, it was 2 hours when I started.) Though, I am that guy who doesn’t plan anything that I write so all the time I spend on my novel is either writing or stopping to think.
I don’t think audiences mind having short chapters if the release rate is high enough, ‘high enough’ being maybe once every 2 or three days. Idk, it’s not an exact science. Anything more is a bonus really. Though if you go for longer chapters (by that I mean at least 2k words) a slower release rate is to be expected and I think most people would accept that. It is free after all.
Since I don’t personally write longer chapters I can’t really comment more that that though.
